I have mastered just about every carrier out there, but the onbuhimo remained a challenge to me. I'm not one to back down from a challenge, so I tried every type of onbuhimo in my BWI lending library. I didn't love any of them and or the carrier type. Because I'm a stubborn person, when this toddler sized onbuhimo came up during a flash sale I had to buy it! I'm so glad I did - I really love this carrier, and feel like I have finally mastered it.
With a name like Lavender, I was afraid the colors would be purpley. I was delighted when it arrived and was a lovely muted combination of blues, greens, and grays with navy blue straps. The padding on the shoulders is the thickest of any of the brands I've tried, and it supports the weight of my average-sized 3-year-old comfortably. My 35-pound 4.5-year-old also felt nearly weightless in this. The seat darts and nice wide panel are a perfect fit for my 3 year old, and it's his new favorite carrier. My favorite feature is the PFAs. I feel like the ability to adjust those has really helped me find the onbuhimo love. I have tried onbuhimos that cost 3 times as much as this one, and I still prefer this KolKol onbuhimo. It is lovely, folds up compactly, and the toddler size is a great option for older kiddos. Onbuhimos definitely fit differently than other buckle carriers, and it may take a bit of persistence to find the comfortable sweet spot with it. It's worth the effort, though, especially at this price point!
I have a Lenny Lamb SSC, but my son only likes to use that one when he’s in the front. When I need him on my back, he hated it because all he could see was the middle of my back. I was nervous buying the Kol Kol Onbuhimo, as I really like Lenny lamb, but couldn’t pass up the deal. The shoulder straps are nice and squishy, the cloth is so soft and beautiful. It was easy to put him up higher on my back by putting him in the carrier on the couch, then crouching down and sliding my arms into the straps. He loved that he could see over my shoulders! It does take a different set of muscles and I need to get used to that, but I love that he enjoys going on my back now.
This was my first Onbuhimo, as I generally was a SSC girl before this. Let me just say this thing is awesome! I can't compare to other brands, but I really love this thing. The colors are gorgeous, the material is soft, and the padding is comfy. I love how large the panel is, as I am starting my Onbu life with a 2.5 year old 30lbs toddler and want it to last as long as possible. I even tested out my 45lbs 6 year old in it and it worked like a charm and was just an comfy, surprisingly! The absence of a waist strap is so freeing, and it's an easy up and down now that we have the hang of it. The shipping was fast and easy, and 5mr was in contact the entire time - great customer service!
As always, I love 5mr deals, rewards program and above all, their service is spectacular. Kol Kol Lavender Onbuhimo came in a super handy cotton bag. It folds pretty small and compact. Shoulder padding is very generous and the straps felt comfy enough while wearing my 25 pound toddler. Adjusting was a breeze and the straps stay in place. I was able to position the chest strap comfortably. The hood has generous and easy to reach straps. The handwoven cotton Lavender has beautiful purple, blue and green tones and it feels soft. My toddler is 33 inches tall and I feel he needs to grow a little bit so I can get his shoulders at the same level as mine, but they grow fast. ;) Overall, great quality-budget friendly carrier.
